Review: Vicious by: Victoria Schwab

Vicious by: Victoria Schwab (2013)
368 pages
Genre: Adult/Sci-Fi
Publisher: Tor
Source: The library.
Goodreads Summary: A masterful, twisted tale of ambition, jealousy, betrayal, and superpowers, set in a near-future world.

Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.

Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?

In Vicious, V. E. Schwab brings to life a gritty comic-book-style world in vivid prose: a world where gaining superpowers doesn’t automatically lead to heroism, and a time when allegiances are called into question.

My Review

Victoria Schwab sure knows how to write a gripping novel. She was one of my favorite new author discoveries in 2013. Vicious is nothing like anything I have ever read before, in a very good way. Therefore, I was having a hard time putting how I feel into words, so I will keep this review short and sweet.

Vicious is dark and gritty and starts with a bang. The whole story reminds me a little of Batman and X-men. There is some scientific talk in this book and I was worried it would be so far over my head that I wouldn't enjoy it, but I was wrong. It wasn't a problem. The whole science take on Extra Ordinary people is unique and very interesting.

The characters in Vicious are memorable and one of a kind. Victor and Eli are deliciously fascinating. I love that there isn't a good person or evil person, the line between right and wrong is blurred throughout the entire novel. I of course lean more towards Victor being nice and Eli being evil, but both are just really different, both have reasons for why they do the things they do, and both are crazy.

So there you have it, my very short review since this book was so shocking, intriguing, and different, that I just can't figure out what else to say about it. I can tell you to give it a try and read it, especially if you are in the mood for a dark book that involves super powers. But remember, this one doesn't have any “heroes,” and in my opinion this makes it all the more better.

TTT #16 : My Top Ten Bookish Goals for 2014

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly event hosted over at The Broke and the Bookish.

1. Keep to a schedule/plan ahead with blog posts.

2. Take a break if needed and don't feel guilty about doing so.

3. Actually finish my TBR pile challenge and series challenge this year. Not to mention complete my goodreads challenge... so basically just read all the books!

4. Discover some new blogs and hopefully make some new close blogger friends.

5. Write more discussion posts and stick with my Book Recommendation feature.

6. Write reviews shortly after I finish a book, sooner rather than later.

7. Start and finish editing the novel I wrote last year for NaNoWriMo.

8. Write at least one new novel this year.

9. Do something different with the layout of the blog. I'm not sure what yet, but I feel it coming.

10. Make it to at least one author signing/bookish event.

Bout of Books Challenge: Book Buying Spree

Bout of Books

Book Buying Spree
Hosted by: Bookish Comforts

The ChallengeImagine if you will: you’ve just received some FANTASTIC news! You have won a $100 book buying spree! Now comes the hard part though: what books will you buy?! For this challenge, you’ll be creating your book buying spree wishlist.

Of course I was going to participate in this challenge, and I'm glad I did because it was a ton of fun! I focused on getting as many books as I could into my cart, keeping in mind that the books have to equal a total of $100 at most. I ended up getting 10 books that I wish I owned to fit into my cart at the total cost of $97.02 I loved pretending to shop for books, my husband said since I do this all the time (the pretending I was rich and bought all the books) I would ace this challenge, and he was right.

Bout of Books Read-A-Thon Sign Up, Goals, & Updates

Since I had so much fun doing this last year I decided to give it a try again this year, and simply because I feel like I'm starting off my bookish year right with a read-a-thon! This is my second year participating in Bout of Books!

Bout of BooksThe Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, January 6th and runs through Sunday, January 12th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 9.0 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team

My Goals

The Books
Twp Boys Kissing by: David Levithan - I heard it is great. Enough said.

The Returned by: Jason Mott - Not only have I been dying to read this, but I received this book through ARCycling and I know they want my review. ;)

~ Cinder by: Marissa Meyer - I read this book a long time ago but don't remember it well enough to read Scarlet and Cress so I'm diving back in.

Scarlet by: Marissa Meyer - I'm excited to finally read this, not to mention that it is part of a sequel challenge I'm participating in this year.

The Bookish Report

Here are all of the top bookish stories, blog posts, pictures, and videos I found this past week. I put this post up every Sunday so come back again next week for more bookish awesomeness.

Click away and enjoy your Sunday!

News

J.K. Rowling is writing a Harry Potter prequel for the stage. I'm down with this. (I'm trying to sound calm and not act like a crazy overexcited person.)

They decided on a tagline for the book to movie adaptation for The Fault in Our Stars, and I seriously can't believe it. It reads: "One sick love story." Ugh.

Do you want to see which books sold the most in 2013? It is an interesting but not too surprising of a list.

We finally discovered who leaked that J.K. Rowling was writing as Robert Galbraith. J.K. was/is not happy and I don't blame her.

I feel like not enough people appreciate libraries as much as they should as of late, and that makes me said. Read these beautiful quotes about libraries.

Blog Posts

There is a Bout of Books read-a-thon that begins tomorrow! There is still time to sign up. I have yet to decide if I am going to, but I thought I would share this with you in case you want to participate.

If you are ever worried about plagiarism then I suggest you take a peek at this post over at Dear, Restless Reader.

I am sure all of you who follow my blog know that I am a Harry Potter fan. Therefore, this post over at Writer of Wrongs, 20 Signs You're From the Harry Potter Generation, made my day. I really could relate. If you are a HP fan you will enjoy this.

ARC Review: Defy by: Sara B. Larson

Defy (#1) by: Sara B. Larson (Jan. 7, 2014)
336 pages
Genre: YA/Fantasy
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Source: Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for giving me an ARC of Defy. This did not affect my honest review.
Goodreads Summary: A lush and gorgeously written debut, packed with action, intrigue, and a thrilling love triangle.

Alexa Hollen is a fighter. Forced to disguise herself as a boy and serve in the king's army, Alex uses her quick wit and fierce sword-fighting skills to earn a spot on the elite prince's guard. But when a powerful sorcerer sneaks into the palace in the dead of night, even Alex, who is virtually unbeatable, can't prevent him from abducting her, her fellow guard and friend Rylan, and Prince Damian, taking them through the treacherous wilds of the jungle and deep into enemy territory.

The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. And suddenly, after her own secret is revealed, Alex finds herself confronted with two men vying for her heart: the safe and steady Rylan, who has always cared for her, and the dark, intriguing Damian. With hidden foes lurking around every corner, is Alex strong enough to save herself and the kingdom she's sworn to protect?

My Review

When reading Defy there was one thing that kept popping up into my head, “this book is trying too hard.” Defy tries sometimes with desperation to be the next best young adult fantasy novel. Although it has its positive attributes, there are a good handful of negative ones that it brings to the table as well.

Alexa is a strong female who has to disguise herself as a boy in order to survive and the prince is dreamy, but all the characters seem to fit into a stereotypical fantasy character mold, making none of them really all that unique. Even though the synopsis warns us of a love triangle I was hoping it wouldn’t bother me, but it wasn’t thrilling like the synopsis promised.

There are some cool magic and sword fighting scenes that lived up and somewhat surpassed my expectations, but those were the only real highlights of Defy. Sadly the whole book was pretty predictable and just seemed like it was trying too hard to win my attention. Not to mention that a few of the plot points seemed to make no sense to me and it felt like the author just added them in there for conflict or for whatever reason, but it just didn’t work.

Even though Defy wasn’t an epic fantasy, it still held my attention and I will probably read the second one, although this one ended okay if it were a standalone. Therefore, I guess I don’t know if and to who I would recommend this book to. If you are a big fantasy novel fan, I feel like you wouldn’t like this one as much since it doesn't add anything really new to the genre, but then again you never know. I guess I will just have to sign off by saying that if you skip past this one it wouldn't be a huge loss.
