The Bookish Report

Here are all of the top bookish stories, blog posts, pictures, and videos I found this past week. I put this post up every Sunday so come back again next week for more bookish awesomeness.Click away and enjoy your Sunday!

News

  • HapperCollins has updated its website so us bookish folks can purchase their books directly from their website.
  • Marvel's Avengers Now! bookswill feature a female Thor, an African-American Captain America, and Iron Man gets a make over. I don't read comics, but I like the change up.
  • I'm sure you have all heard about and read the new mini HP story on pottermore. Well, I honestly don't know how I feel about it but this articlehas some interesting things to say on the topic. I do find it weird that J.K Rowling decided to post this article by Rita Skeeter, who is not a reliable narrator.
  • Walter Dean Myers has passed away. I love his novel Fallen Angels. May he rest in peace.
  • Amazon has launched kindleunlimited. For $9.99 a month you can receive unlimited ebooks. It sounds like Netflix for your reader. While I can see this as being a cool concept, simply because I love books, if I want ebooks I either get them from the library or purchase them. Either way, this just sounds like a dumb concept for those of us who have a local library that does this for you for free already. Not to mention, Amazon is already getting a bad reputation with books.

Blog Posts

  • She may have been a littlecreepy, but haven't we all been creepy to some degree at some point, especially when it comes to books? I have.
  • I always try to do something bookish on every vacation I take and so does The Reading Geek!

News

Apparently just about every book is being made into a movie or television show lately, as I'm sure you have noticed simply by reading these bookish news posts. This time J.K. Rowling's Casual Vacancy is being made into a television mini series.

The third Throne of Glass book by Maas, Heir of Fire, has had its cover revealed! YES!

I am sure all my followers know by now that I am a big Downton Abbey fan. Well, I have another lovely article that gives some great young adult historical fiction reading suggestions for Downton Abbey fans.

The Princess Diaries series is coming back...for adults! This series was my favorite when I was younger. This news made my whole day.

This is a must read: The 23 Things We Think Upon Entering a Bookstore.

Even though I'm sure you all have heard, if you haven't then you should take a second to get updated about wanting more diversity in young adult books. Here are two interesting blog posts about the subject: Bookcon's Lack of Representation & Thoughts on Diversity in YA

Blog Posts

Check out this cute Where The Wild Things Are nursery!

You really should check out Buckling Bookshelves' new unique feature, Required Re-Reading where she re-reads books she had to read for class. This week she talked about how she didn't appreciate The Joy Luck Club the first time, but really enjoyed it the second time.

Have you ever had trouble organizing your TBR pile on goodreads? I know I have. Nicole over at The Quiet Concert shares her organization tips. It may give you some helpful ideas for your own list. It did for me.

It's not okay to steal, ever. If you want some free and/or cheap books, read this post.

This discussion post was a lot of fun to read and comment on. Have you ever thought about your favorite fictional characters and their lives once the book your reading ends?

News

My 2014 summer reading list is already starting to get out of control, but my love for lists and new shiny books made me giddy and excited when I came across Publisher Weekly's list of Best Summer Books 2014.

Chloe Grace Moretz has been in about 10 book to movie adaptations including If I Stay by Gayle Forman, Dark Places by Gillian Flynn, and apparently The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey. The young adult books to movies are ever growing. I'm not sure what I think of this. I base my decision on if I want to see them on their trailers.

Author Gabriel García Márquez died at 87. Rest In Peace

Blog Posts

I have read so many books where the pacing seems off, or I'm just not happy with it. There Were Books Involved has a great post on the importance of pacing. If pacing is a bookish topic that interests you then I would highly suggest you check out this post.

If you are looking for some laughs then you must read Parajunkee's post, Cover Junk. There are some highly amusing bad covers featured and Parajunkee's comments just make the post that much better.

The Cafenated Book Reviewer never seems to fail at having interesting and unique blog posts. She is starting a new feature, Recipe & A Book Recommendation! This week features Death Dip and Zombies. Check it out.

Videos

Will you be seeing any of these? I plan to see them at least on DVD, I'm not sure about seeing them in theaters yet.

News

Deborah Harkness has announced her tour for the last Discovery of Witches book, The Book of Life. I really hope I can make it to her stop in the Chicago area. July can't get here fast enough.

Next time you are looking for some new book recommendations you should really read this interesting list of books you should read now based on books you read as a child. I know I will be using this list in the future.

If you have yet to check out the stunning new covers of the Percy Jackson series then obviously you need to. I like the old covers a lot, but I am loving the new ones as well.

Have you been impatiently waiting for the next book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin? Well you are in luck, a very short excerpt of the upcoming book has been released, and you will get to find out the release date soon...hopefully.

I also want to share with you that all of the Four (Divergent) short stories will be released in one volume in July and I am more than ready. For more information and to see the cool cover you will have to read this little article.

Blog Posts

These covers of books being released this fall will make your mouth hang open in awe.

If you are a fan of New Adult and are interested in getting a review copy or promoting the new book Falling for Autumn by an author I really like, Heather Topham Wood, then you should probably be vising this page for details.

Christine at Buckling Bookshelves wrote another thought provoking discussion post on her blog detailing the issue of when to promote/review those brand new/ARC books.

News

This article on reading books to shelter dogs will make you smile and make you want to read to your pet. To put it simply, it is just really cool.

I was a huge Berenstain Bears fan when I was younger and I learned so many good lesson from those books. Therefore If All Adults Reread 'The Berenstain Bears,' The World Would Be A Much Better Place is an article you don't want to miss. It makes me want to reread the books, and keep in mind that whenever I have children these books will be on their shelves.

Out of the 14 paperbacks that are reenacting their own plots Dracula, The Hobbit, and The War of the Worlds were my favorites. What are your favorites?

At only 13 years old this girl has collected over a million books to give to those in need. Wow, she is awesome.

After thinking about it for a long time J.K. Rowling says that she thinks Harry and Hermione should have ended up together. What?!?! It's all in the past so why bring this up now and make the fans go just a little crazy?

Blog Post

Inspiring Insomnia wrote a very fun and interesting post about her new desk calendar. Okay, I just realized that doesn't sound very fun, but it is because it is a calendar for book lovers and she created a great system to find new books to add to her TBR pile by using the calendar. I want one of these calendars now. No joke.

Hilarious. True.

What do you think of the first 50 Shades of Grey poster? I think it's actually pretty good, I like the approach they ended up taking. (one where people have clothes on)

I know you have probably already watched it, but I had to share the first trailer for The Fault In Our Stars. What do you think? I may or may not have gotten teary eyed.

News

With all the crazy stuff I see floating around on the internet lately I'm really starting to believe that people just have too much time on their hands. And yet, I still look at the funny photos and read the funny articles, so maybe I have too much time on my hands. Anyway, If Your Favorite Literary Icons Had Dating Profiles is one of those type of articles, but it is worth the read.

Did you know that Gone Girl's ending was rewritten for the movie! What is up with that?

The cover to the last book in The Discovery of Witches trilogy has been revealed! I'm so excited for The Book of Life! There is also an excerpt.

I really didn't realize so many book to movie adaptations were happening this year, although I shouldn't really be surprised. Although book to movie adaptations don't normally end all that well, I'm really excited about some of these, like Divergent.

Blog Posts

Do you ever forget what you read? I do. I read a lot of books and I just can't remember everything that I read. Sometimes I'll even start reading a book only to realize part way through that I have read it before. This isn't an issue as much anymore thanks to goodreads, but if this has ever happened to you I suggest you take a minute to read: Forgetting What I read: A Justification.

I seriously didn't even know using hahstags in your blog post titles was a thing. Well apparently it is.

Do you ever watch documentaries? I do on occasion and was super excited that Foil The Plot came out with this helpful list of documentaries you should give a chance. I watched Blackfish...I won't be going to SeaWorld ever.

There have been a few times where I have come across a book cover with someone on it that looks like a celebrity. With that being said, you must read:  Celebrity Doppelgangers on Young Adult Covers.

Like everyone else I'm sure you all have probably been in a reading slump at least once. If you are in one right now or for a future reference, read Publisher's Weekly's article 6 Ways to Beat Reader's Block.

You NEED to read this article: 13 Clever Signs That Will Make You Want To Buy a Book. These are hilarious, fun, so true, and convincing, not that I need convincing.

Catching Fire came out in theaters this week! I can tell you that it is an amazing movie and even better than the first one. Have you seen it yet? What did you think? I had such a wide range of emotions while watching. Anyway, if you have seen the movie (Link Spoiler Alert) check out this list of the 12 big changes from page to screen in Catching Fire.

If you are still looking for a secret Santa type gift exchange to participate in this year because you want to participate in more than one or you missed the deadline for the other one, there is still a chance to sign up for the The Belles' Enchanted Book Exchange.

Nicole over at The Quiet Concert wrote a very interesting post this week discussing whether she is being unfair to young adult books. There are many times that this idea has crossed my mind when reviewing a young adult book when I didn't like it as much because it was too juvenile, even though it is in fact a young adult book. Therefore, I have wondered if sometimes I'm too harsh when reviewing young adult books, but either way I'm probably going to keep reviewing like I have been. Do you think you are ever unfair to young adult books?

Parajunkee conducted a book blogger survey a little while ago and some of the results are in! I always love reading surveys for some reason.

E.L. James, author of the Fifty Shades trilogy, has apparently made wine to go along with her books. Okay then. You have to check out the wine website, not to purchase the wine so much as to laugh.

Stephen King has written a sequel to The Shinning. This article talks all about it. Will you be reading it?

Are you a fan of The Wizard of Oz? Then you don't want to miss this! There will be three digital novellas series published titled Dorothy Must Die. It sounds very interesting.

Did you know that these authors' works were initially rejected?! I'm really glad they ended up getting published.

You have to take a second to read this hilarious but creepy list of young adult books that will screw up your life. This list of course includes The Hunger Games, but it also includes The Babysitters Club.

The 20 Stages of Reading is a unique comic that shouldn't be missed.

I know we have all seen book marketing and even take part in it, but I've never seen anything like this unique $5 book marketing website before!

BLOG POSTS

Do you ever feel pressured or worried about reading a book that has been recommended to you? Check out Read My Breath Away's blog post about this topic that I'm sure everyone has encountered.

Goodreads has tightened their review guidelines! I've seen a few people who think this is great and ones that think it's not. Here is Bookish Treasure's opinion. What is yours? In brief, I really don't think the guidelines are that bad and may actually help with some of the drama going on lately. But I also believe in the right to say whatever you want. The shelf names being a problem is what really bothers me with the guidelines that I don't necessarily agree with, but I can understand why they wouldn't allow a book review that doesn't have anything to do with the book and is not actually a book review but just bashing the author not being allowed. I do think people should be notified if any of their reviews/shelves are being deleted. From what I gather from the guidelines goodreads is focusing on both readers and authors and trying to prevent bashing from occurring, but if you are writing a book review you can rate as negative or as positive as you want on the actual book. In the end everyone has their own opinion on this subject matter and I respect whatever it is.

I honestly can't believe that 71% (I thought this number would be slightly smaller) of travelers prefer print books over e-books. I know this survey wasn't conducted in the states but still. I love print books over e-books but when it comes to traveling I would rather have an e-book.

Julianne Moore was cast as the Hunger Games President Coin. I think it will work. :)

J.K. Rowling and Warner Bros. announced a new movie franchise that Rowling will be writing based on her book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them!!!!!!  My mouth hung open when I read this in disbelief. I think this will be amazing! It may not feature Harry Potter but still. Pretty crazy news.

A librarian saved $1 Million to give back to libraries. I am astounded by this woman and I give her mad props and am saddened by hear death. It proves that there are still some amazing people out there. Libraries are important and a great and important part of the community.

BLOG POSTS

You should really take a few minutes to read The Book Addict's Guide's blog post about making goodreads work for you. She made a fun infographic about how people use goodreads based off a survey she did, and who doesn't love a good infographic? Also, I found a couple of new things about goodreads that I love and didn't even know about before.

Sometimes it gets frustrating when young adult books don't swear but can talk about difficult problems. I'm not saying they need to be filled with curse words, but it makes it more believable when the 17-year-old characters drops a bad word when they are in a crazy situation. Lili's Reflections wrote an interesting post about this topic.

Do you ever get confused when trying to figure out what genre you are reading? Writer of Wrongs explains them pretty darn well.

I'm a pretty fast reader but not nearly fast enough. You should really check out The Fiction Conniption's post featuring speed reading.

About a month ago I finally got a new job after my husband and I moved! Although it is only part time, I was lucky enough to snag a job at my local library (yes, the one with the drive-up window) as a page. I'm loving it. As soon as I told my friend about this she sent me this picture so I had to share with you all.

I didn't have a bookish news post last week due to the fact that I was in Vegas on vacation. Don't worry though, I'm back and have brought you a ton of goodies this week!!

ARTICLES

Have you heard of the website moviepilot? If not you should check it out. It has a whole section with updated news on book to movie adaptions.

USA Today
Okay guys, this is my favorite bookish news this week, besides the trailers below of course. Adults are getting a celebrity coloring book full of sexy male celebs. I wonder how much they are going to charge for that. I'm not even sure I have words for this little piece of news, except laughter. The best part, it's called "Color Me Swoon." I'm thinking teens may find this to be awesome.

Want a sneak peak of Allegiant by Veronica Roth? I know you do!

Travelodge has recently released a list of books left behind in its UK franchises. I'm actually sad so many people leave behind books in their hotel rooms, but then again maybe the person who finds it will enjoy the book and it really does spread the book joy. Or maybe the book was just crap.

They are going to add "twerking" to the Oxford Dictionary. I'm not sure I have words for this and I didn't even know what this was until I watched the VMAs, which I am trying to block out. (Except for the very short yet amazing Nsync reunion.)

If you want a good laugh read 20 of The Biggest Dick Moves in Literature. This article is so true.

There is a new feature over at Bookish Comforts, Piece of Cake. This week Bookish Comforts offers great advice on how not to receive those pesky gmail emails saying you received a new comment on your blog when in fact it is only your own that you just posted. I have yet to change this in my email but I plan to thanks to Bookish Comforts.

There are many times when I read a book that is getting a ton of positive feedback and a lot of attention and I just don't like it. I tend to wonder if something is wrong with me. Luckily I discovered that I am not alone, Reading the Best of the Best has a great post up this week that discusses this.

I really enjoyed Bookish Treasures' post on what she thinks authors should do when writing review requests. What frustrates me the most is not getting addressed by my name or blog title but just as blogger. Or when the requester obviously hasn't read my review policy and sends me a book in a genre I don't review.

Noteworthy blogger tips and advice can be found over at Coffee and Characters. It's a short little post but really worth the read.

Want to spice things up on the blog or just enjoy doing surveys? Here is another cool one this week, The Random # Survey.

The Divergent trailer is here!! I'm beyond excited.

The Book Theif trailer is here!! It looks good. Although the best part of the book for me was death's narration and I don't know what they are going to do with that in the movie.
