Five on Friday: Recently Added to my TBR Pile

I love sharing the recent books I have added to my TBR pile with you all! Hopefully these posts help your piles grow as dangerously large as mine! muwahahaha Kidding. Kind of. My list includes an amazing sounding fantasy novel, a new book by Meg Cabot, a scarily realistic dystopian, a tale of friendship that also discusses abortion, and a new young adult vampire book!

1. Crown of Oblivion by Julie Eshbaugh (November 12, 2019)
+ Add to Goodreads

Astrid is the surrogate for Princess Renya, which means she bears the physical punishment if Renya steps out of line. Astrid has no choice—she and her family are Outsiders, the lower class of people without magic and without citizenship.

But there is a way out of this life—competing in the deadly Race of Oblivion. To enter the race, an Outsider is administered the drug Oblivion, which wipes their memory clear of their past as they enter a new world with nothing to help them but a slip of paper bearing their name and the first clue. It’s not as simple as solving a puzzle, however—for a majority of the contestants, the race ends in death. But winning would mean not only freedom for Astrid, but citizenship and health care for her entire family.

2. No Judgments by Meg Cabot (September 24, 2019)
+ Add to Goodreads

When a massive hurricane severs all power and cell service to Little Bridge Island—as well as its connection to the mainland—twenty-five-year-old Bree Beckham isn’t worried . . . at first. She’s already escaped one storm—her emotionally abusive ex—so a hurricane seems like it will be a piece of cake.

But animal-loving Bree does become alarmed when she realizes how many islanders have been cut off from their beloved pets. Now it’s up to her to save as many of Little Bridge’s cats and dogs as she can . . . but to do so, she’s going to need help—help she has no choice but to accept from her boss’s sexy nephew, Drew Hartwell, the Mermaid Café’s most notorious heartbreaker.

3. Verify by Joelle Charbonneau (September 24, 2019)
+ Add to Goodreads

Meri Beckley lives in a world without lies. When she turns on the news, she hears only the facts. When she swipes the pages of her online textbooks, she reads only the truth. When she looks at the peaceful Chicago streets, she feels the pride everyone in the country feels about the era of unprecedented hope and prosperity over which the government presides.

But when Meri’s mother is killed, Meri suddenly has questions that no one else seems to be asking. And when she tries to uncover her mother’s state of mind in her last weeks, she finds herself drawn into a secret world full of facts she’s never heard and a history she didn’t know existed.

4. Unpregnant by Jenni Hendriks and Ted Caplan (September 10, 2019)
+ Add to Goodreads

Seventeen-year-old Veronica Clarke never thought she would wish she’d failed a test until she finds herself holding a thick piece of plastic in her hands and staring at two solid pink lines. Even the most consistent use of condoms won’t prevent pregnancy when your boyfriend secretly pokes holes in them to keep you from going out-of-state for college. Veronica needs an abortion, but the closest place she can legally get one is over nine hundred miles away—and Veronica doesn’t have a car. Too ashamed to ask her friends or family for help, Veronica turns to the one person she believes won’t judge her: Bailey Butler, Jefferson High’s own little black cloud of anger and snark—and Veronica’s ex-best friend.

5. The Beautiful by Renee Ahdieh (October 8, 2019)
+ Add to Goodreads

In 1872, New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead. But to seventeen-year-old Celine, New Orleans provides her a refuge after she's forced to flee her life as a dressmaker in Paris. Are any of these already on your TBR pile? Did you find a new title to add?

Five on Friday: Television Shows

Now that I am done with grad school I seem to be spending a lot of my time reading, hanging with family/friends, or binge watching television shows. Therefore, I just had to share my most recent television obsessions. Have you seen any of these shows?

My Current Television Show Obsessions

Bodyguard

When I saw Richard Madden (GoT) win an award for his role in the Bodyguard, a TV show that I had seen highlighted on Netflix many many times, I knew it was time I give it a whirl. I was not disappointed. His acting is superb, the plot is intense, and overall it was a great show.

Killing Eve

I think Sandra Oh is a great actress and I couldn't wait to see her role in her new television show. Killing Eve was nothing like it expected it to be. It was filled with dark humor and amazing acting by all. This one is not to be missed. You can find this thrilling title on Hulu.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

The last few episodes are here! I am trying to only watch an episode a day to make it last. The two episodes I have seen so far are as hilarious as ever. I am sad to see the show end, but also hope it ends on a high note. I am not sure it would have kept being funny for too much longer.

You

This show can be creepy and funny at the same time. I don't like a single character, but I am engrossed in this story. What's her name from Pretty Little Liars and what's his name from Gossip Girl are the stars of the show. Hmmmmm, I am just now realizing that I watch a lot of dark/twisty shows.

Superstore

Why are more people not watching this show? It is ridiculous and hilarious and I love it. I am so glad my husband convinced me to give it a try. Each character adds their own fun quirks to the show, and I just can't get enough. I am currently binge watching the crap out of this.

Five on Friday: Recently Added to My TBR Pile

This week's Five on Friday features the books I have recently added to my TBR pile. I can't wait for these ones! It is starting to look like 2019 isn't going to help keep my TBR pile from growing to epic proportions.

1. The Antidote by Shelley Sackier
+ Add to Goodreads

Magic isn't allowed, and yet Fee can only save her best friend by using magic. What is she supposed to do? I love a good book about forbidden magic, and this cover is gorgeous.

2. The Beautiful by Renee Ahdied
+ Add to Goodreads

She's bringing vampires back, and I am ready! *grabby hands*

3. Hot Dog Girl by Jennifer Dugan
+Add to Goodreads

The delightful people on the cover in the fun costumes work at Magic Castle Playland, and it may be closing! This book sounds like a perfect summer read full of friendships and disasters.

4. Stolen Time by Danielle Rollins
+ Add to Goodreads

I never say no to a time travel novel.

5. Once & Future by Amy Rose Capetta & Cori McCarthy
+ Add to Goodreads

The voice of the writing and the overall plot remind me of a mix of Cinder and Percy Jackson. Hell. Yes. Plus, a unique retelling of The Sword and the Stone? What more could I want? Nothing.

Five on Friday: Movies to Watch This October

I freaking love fall. I love the cooler weather. I love the sweaters, boots, and scarves. I love watching the leaves change colors. I love football and I love pumpkin spice everything. Last but not least, I love watching horror movies during the month of October as the days lead up to Halloween. Okay, I think I have declared my love for fall enough for one day. Today I am sharing with you some of my favorite movies to watch during the month of October.

Hocus Pocus
This is a must watch for me every year, and I am sure I am not alone. Some of my favorite movie lines come from Hocus Pocus. "Oh look, another glorious morning. Makes me sick!" I also love how many inappropriate jokes there are that I didn't realize until I was older.

The Cabin in the Woods
This clever and surprisingly fun (you can't normally say that about horror movies) take on the horror movie genre is a delight. There are a lot of shocking moments, and it certainly doesn't hurt that Chris Hemsworth is in the movie.

The Birds
I'm still not quite sure why I watch this movie every year since I actually am not a big fan of birds, but I do it anyway. Every time I see a whole bunch of black birds in one spot I get the chills. I have been watching this one since I was very young, and perhaps that is the reason why I am not a big fan of birds...

Practical Magic
I can never get enough movies about witches, especially badass ones. This movie has a fantastic cast with Nicole Kidman, Sandra Bullock, Stockard Channing, and Dianne Wiest. If you are fan of this movie too then I suggest you read the recent anthology titled Toil & Trouble: 15 Tales of Women & Witchcraft.

A Quiet Place
This is obviously a new one that I have now added onto my rotation! Watching this movie in theaters was a unique experience. The theater had never been more quiet as everyone carefully ate their snacks, or avoided them all together.

Five on Friday: Recently Added to My TBR Pile

This week's Five on Friday featuring recently added books to my TBR pile has a very interesting mix of various genres. I hope you find something new to add to your own pile. Plus, I am loving these covers. I know I can't wait to get my hands on these beauties.

1. Your Own Worst Enemy by Gordon Jack

I think this book is going to make me laugh. "If this were an ordinary high school election, the winner would be whichever candidate was the most popular. But this year, each candidate may have to sink to a new low to win an election that could change the course of...very little."

2. That's Not What Happened by Kody Keplinger

This one sounds like it is going to be a heartbreaking and very suspenseful novel. "I don't know what will be worse: the guilt of staying silent or the consequences of speaking up . . ."

3. If Only by Jennifer Gilmore

If Only sounds real and strong. "A beautiful and thought-provoking non-linear literary novel about a pregnant teen and a teen searching for her birth mother."

4. Kiss of the Royal by Lindsey Duga

I love a good fantasy/romance novel. This one sounds like it will give me all the feels! "Falling for each other wasn’t part of the plan—but try convincing their hearts of that."

5. I'll be Gone in the Dark

I have recently started listening to the My Favorite Murder podcast and I can't seem to get enough true crime. This book has gotten a lot of praise and I have to read a nonfiction book for my grad school class this summer so I figured I would give it a try.

Five on Friday: Book Nerd Problems

This Friday I feel like sharing a few book nerd problems I have been having lately. Can you relate?

1. When you just finished reading a pretty good book but can't seem to remember a single freaking thing about it. (This makes it very hard when you want to write a review about the book or discuss it in class.)

2. When your puppy decides to nibble on the book you are reading. (He doesn't normally cause any real damage, but one time he did rip off a corner of a book jacket. Good thing he is adorable.)

3. When you are not in the mood to read any of the books you have... and you have a lot.

4. When you really want to a buy a new book that just came out but you also already asked for it for your birthday.

5. When you realize that you accidentally left your favorite bookmark in a library book you returned weeks ago... and it wasn't a book from your home library so it is long gone.

Five on Friday: Favorite Workout Videos

I was one of those people that didn't really believe in New Year's resolutions, but this year I decided to shake things up. This year I am trying to live a more healthier lifestyle. I gained some weight over the last year or so because I stopped making time to exercise and eat healthy. This may have had something to do with starting grad school while working two jobs and getting a puppy... So far I have been drinking more water, working out four days a week (using these YouTube channels), and eating healthy(ish). I lost four pounds this first month so I must be doing something right.

Anyway, I have discovered two channels on YouTube that offer such a variety of (free!) videos that I have yet to get bored! Therefore, I thought I would share my favorites with you all. First up is JessicaSmithTV, she offers a variety of different programs (free and paid) that you can follow on her website along with hundreds of free videos on YouTube. My other favorite is Blogilates, Casey offers a free beginner calendar you can follow on her website along with an abundance of other cool stuff. I am slowly going through both of their videos to find my favorites and make my own weekly workout playlists. Without further ado, here are some of my favorite videos so far and why I like them.

JessicaSmithTV

So far this is my favorite exercise video that I have come across, and that's mostly because it is fun! It also doesn't hurt that Jessica's dog Peanut makes an appearance in many of her videos. She is adorable and motivating! I always feel great after doing this workout.

I worked up a sweat doing this one! I plan to do her entire HIIT for Beginners series.

Until I did this video I really didn't know how much I would benefit from getting some stretching into my weekly routine. I am not flexible at all, but I am hoping to change that. This routine felt great and is perfect to complete after a workout.

Blogilates

When I first heard of this arm workout that didn't involve any weights or push ups I was a little skeptical. I was wrong. My arms were burning towards the end of the video, and the next day they were very sore.

Another favorite video of Casey's that I enjoy. It's perfect for blogilate newbs. Many of her videos are challenging for me, but the more I do them the better I get!

What are some of your favorite exercise videos? Did you make any resolutions for the new year?

Five on Friday: Recently Added to my TBR Pile

1. Save the Date by Morgan Matson
+ Add to Goodreads

This. Sounds. Freaking. Awesome. I have enjoyed Morgan Matson's other books and I am really looking forward to this new one. It sounds like a disasterous wedding filled with family drama and a cute boy.

2. I am Still Alive by Kate Marshall
+ Add to Goodreads

Survival. Revenge. An awesome sounding protagonist. I can't wait to read this!

3. The Academy by Katie Sise
+ Add to Goodreads

This reminds me of Cadet Kelly but better. Do you remember that Disney Channel Movie? I do. It was one of my favorites.

4. Tell Me No Lies by A.V. Geiger
+ Add to Goodreads

After the ending of the first book, Follow Me Back, I NEED answers. I can't wait for book two.`

5. Love, Hate & Other Filters by Samira Ahmed
+ Add to Goodreads

"A searing #OwnVoices coming-of-age debut in which an Indian-American Muslim teen confronts Islamophobia and a reality she can neither explain nor escape." That description sold me.

Have any of these books made it on to your TBR pile?

Five on Friday: Current Television Show Obsessions

I am not sure where this idea originated from since it is so widely used on the internet, but thank you to whoever did start this fun meme. Anyway, I decided it may be a fun feature to do on the blog so I thought I would give it a whirl, but I have no idea how often I will participate. This week I have decided to focus on the television shows I just can't stop watching.

My Current Television Show Obsessions

Chicago Fire

Chicago Fire has me hooked. The characters, the intense first responder scenes, and everything about this show just makes me smile. After two months of binge watching all previous seasons of Chicago Fire I am now all caught up.

The Magicians

I didn't think I would like this show, but season two is better than ever and season three is just around the corner. I can't get enough of Elliot and Margot's snark. This show is like a mashup of Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia with a whole lot of sarcasm and poking fun at the genre.

Peaky Blinders

Season four is on Netflix and I can't wait to start it! Cillian Murphy is one amazing actor. Don't let the weird name (it is explained in the first episode) keep you from watching this gem. It's an added bonus that it is a BBC show.

Broadchurch

I just finished the most current and last season of Broadchurch. I really am going to miss Alec Hardy (David Tennant) and Ellie Miller's (Olivia Colman) awesome detective skills. This is a dark show with an amazing cast. Although the crimes are sad and all too real, it is still worth watching.

American Housewife

Although I found the beginning episodes back in season one to be too dumb and unfunny for my tastes, I was proved wrong. Although it still can be pretty dumb, it can also be hilarious, clever, and relatable. I am really enjoying this show.

Do you watch any of these shows? What is your current television show obsession?
