TTT #18: Top Ten Popular Authors I've Never Read

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly event hosted over at The Broke and the Bookish.

Popular Authors I want to Read but Haven't

1. Neil Gaiman I have no idea why I have yet to read any books by this author but it is pretty embarrassing. *Hangs head in shame.* If you have any suggestions on where I should start please share in the comments!

2. Jennifer L. Armentrout  - I've heard so many good things about her Lux series. I really don't know why I'm waiting to start it.

3. Lois Lowry - I must read The Giver before the movie comes out!

4. Ally Carter - The Heist Society series just sounds like it's right up my alley.

5. Patrick Ness  - I really want to try reading his works...someday...maybe...hopefully.

The Classic Authors I Really Need to Get Around to

6. Agatha Christie  - I am not sure why I have read nothing by Agatha. :/

7. Arthur Conan Doyle I have not read a single Sherlock story. Sad day.

8. Ray Bradbury  - This is the most embarrassing entry on this list. I haven't read Fahrenheit 451. I'm horrible, I know. I vow to red this book this year.

The Ones I Have No Strong Desire to Start Reading Anytime Soon

9. Cassandra Clare Everyone tells me to read her books, but for some reason I just keep putting it off. I think it may be because I saw the movie and the whole are we may be related thing was a turn off.

10. Richelle Mead  - I love vampire novels. I really do. On the other hand, I don't want to read any more crappy ones. Feel free to tell me I'm wrong and I will move this one up on my TBR pile.

  1. I have Cassandra Clare and Richelle Mead on my list, but unlike you, I do want to start them. I have the first Vampire Academy novel as well as Clockwork Angel. Hopefully I like the series! Great list!

  2. Fahrenheit 451 is so good! I even liked it in high school, which is really saying something -- I'd love to re-read it actually. I've read a few Conan Doyle stories, but have been meaning to read more -- same thing with Agatha Christie -- I have a vague memory of reading one of her books, but I couldn't even tell you which one so I'm starting to wonder if I made it up....

I read the Giver in the 8th grade (yea, that was a long time ago!) and have been meaning to revisit it since I found out it's a series. I only just picked up Gaiman's American Gods from the used bookstore a few weeks ago and have heard it's a good one to start with, as I'm a newbie to his books as well.

I skipped this week's TTT since I chose a really similar topic for last week's freebie -- I think I stirred up enough guilt already, lol. But now that I've finally started Divergent, Veronica Roth wouldn't have made my list :)

    1. I really really really need to read Fahrenheit 451!! It makes me feel better about reading it since you liked it so much! I am really hoping to read The Giver before the movie comes out, but I guess I would need to find out when that is.

I'm so happy you are reading Divergent! I can't wait to see what you think!!!! (Wow, I really like exclamation points today.)

  3. The Giver is such a beautiful book (I try to read it once a year), so I highly recommend it, especially before the film comes out.
Neil Gaiman is brilliant and has yet to dissappoint me. The Graveyard Book and Coraline are amazing if you are interested in reading some of his YA. The Ocean at the End of the lane was an incredible read as well.

  5. I've only read one Neil Gaiman book. It feels that everyone has read everything by him.

  6. Agatha Christie's novels are a lot of fun and easy reads. I highly recommend them Murder on the Orient Express or The Seven Dials Mystery to start out.

    1. Thanks for the Gaiman book recs! I really do need to read The Giver and Fahrenheit 451, I'm thinking about making them mandatory to read this summer.

  9. I totally know what you mean about Richelle Mead and the "crappy" vampire novels. I thought the same exact thing until the movie was going to come out and I had to at least try it in case I saw it. (I'm a diehard read the book before seeing the movie type.) I was blown away at how well-developed and un-crappy it was. There is tons of action and the romance between Rose and Dimitri is by far one of the most swoon-worthy. I guess all I'm saying is I never picked it up because I hated the cover; it gives off that "crappy" YA vamp novel vibe, but it's totally worth the read. I blew through all six in a week.

    1. Thanks for your thoughts on Richelle Mead. I'm thinking I'm going to have to give them a try now, especially because you read all 6 in a week. That is usually a good sign that a series is worth taking a chance on. :D

    2. Oh and I prefer reading the book before seeing the movie as well. The few times I didn't do that and I didn't like the movie much so I never ended up reading the book, even the book is always better. :/

  10. I haven't read any on your popular authors list, haha. Seems like everyone has read Lowry except us!! I've read 1 Agatha Christie (& Then There Were None), didn't love it but I would probably try another one. Actually, looking at it, I've only read Christine on this entire list!

Thanks for stopping by my TTT!

    1. I think we may be the only ones that haven't read Lowry. lol

  11. I like the way you broke up your list! I've only read one book by Neil Gaiman, but if you're looking to get started I would suggest Stardust. It was really a wonderful book, and the movie adaptation was so fun and stuck pretty close to the novel. It hasn't gotten me to his others yet, but not for lack of interest. My TBR pile is just too overwhelming right now as it is, haha!

As for Lois Lowry - GAH. Read them all!! They're all spectacular. I did love The Giver, but Gathering Blue and Number the Stars were just as good.

Thanks for stopping by my blog, I appreciate it!

  12. OK so you are really hurting me here Kay! =P

I really liked Cassandra Clare's books. I read TMI before I read TID and I liked TID much more but I don't mean to diminish TMI because I enjoyed that while I read it. They do get a bit tiresome though, so I don't know if I will read the other 5 series she's starting in this shadowhunter world (I don't know if it is 5 I am just being facetious) but I may. I would recommend The Infernal Devices to you so you can avoid the whole sibling twist, which I admit was weird and uncomfortable, and since it the better of her two series and it will give you a taste of her writing. She creates some pretty great characters, and TID is actually pretty funny.

As for Richelle Mead, she is another author I love and I think you give VA a try too! Don't judge it by the movie - I actually refuse to see it because of how terrible the trailer looks and how the casting sucks IMO. The series is actually pretty damn good. It gets better with every book though, so maybe the first one won't live up to expectations created by the hype of the series as a whole, but it really is worth reading. Not another crappy vampire fiction!

BUT I totally understand your reservations as will I understand if you never read anything by these authors but I think you'd be pleasantly surprised. I can't hurt to try them, you can always DNF :)

    1. Okay I think I am now officially convinced to read the Richelle Mead Vampire Academy series. I think I will start it in the next month or so. I've been hearing so many positive things about it, I love vampires, and since you think I should read it and you love it then I'm thinking I just need to give it a try.

I'm still not sure about Cassandra Clare, I'm still on the fence. I will have to think of that one some more.

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement!
