Baby It's Cold Outside Read-a-Thon

I just came across this challenge and at the very last minute decided to give it a try. I know we are probably all a little busy at this time of year, but I have been in some weird reading funk and I am trying to kick it. I figured this is a great way to try and get me to actually sit down and read! Just visit Read. Sleep. Repeat. to sign-up yourself!

Read-A-Thon Goals

  • To finally FINISH The Night Circus (I have been reading this for weeks.)
  • Read one more holiday novel. I am thinking What Light or Miracle on 5th Avenue.
  • Read one of my ARCs. I am leaning towards The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett.
  • Participate in at least one challenge.
  • Participating in the Twitter Chat tonight.

My Progress

Day 1 - December 17
  • Currently Reading: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
Day 2 - December 18
  • Currently Reading: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
Day 3 - December 19
  • Currently Reading: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern (STILL)
Day 4 - December 20
  • Currently Reading: The same freaking book.
Day 5 - December 21
  • Currently Reading: This is getting embarrassing. I will finish this book!
Day 6 - December 22
  • Currently Reading: I DID IT! I finished The Night Circus.
Day 7 - December 23
  • Currently Reading: The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett by Chelsea Sedoti
Day 8 - December 24
  • Currently Reading: Miracle on 5th Avenue by Sarah Morgan (I read this one in a day!)
TOTAL: I read two books and made it halfway through a third! I also did one challenge and participated in the Twitter chat. I think this read-a-thon was a success considering how busy I was.

Bout of Books Read-A-Thon: Sign Up, Goals, & Updates

Bout of Books is my favorite read-a-thon that I participate in every year. They have one in January, May, and August so you if you can't participate in this one think about participating in one of the others later this year. I always love completing the January read-a-thon because it is a great way to kick start my reading for the year. This time around I have decided to choose my books a little differently. I am going to solely read middle grade novels. I have so many I want to read, but they always take a back seat to the young adult books I like to read, so I figured now would be a good time to read some. They are shorter and quick reads and therefore are perfect for a read-a-thon!

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, January 4th and runs through Sunday, January 10th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 15 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team

Final Thoughts

Bout of Books is still my favorite read-a-thon, but I am a little sad I wasn't able to participate in a Twitter chat this time. Those are usually so much fun! I kept forgetting when they were. I have no excuse. I ended up reading 6 middle grade books, one less than my original goal. I feel very satisified with that number. I am glad I got to read some middle grade books since I am always putting them on the back burner. Overall, this was a good read-a-thon.

Bout of Books Challenge: Road Trip

Road Trip Challenge

The Challenge: Come up with a list of the top 4-5 states/places you'd love to visit and find a book (you either read or want to read) that takes place in that state/place or a book by an author who lives or is from there.

My Book Road Trip

This challenge has to be my favorite of the week! This is a road trip bucket list of sorts, because I really want to visit all of these places at some point in my life before I die. As for the books, I decided to choose books that I have already read and enjoyed.

Bout of Books: Bookshelf Scavenger Hunt & New Year's Resolution Challenge

Bookshelf Scavenger Hunt Challenge
The Challenge: It’s a bookshelf scavenger hunt!Find a book with the following criteria on a bookshelf:

1. Find an author with the same initials as you. - Nada. :(
2. Find a book with the color yellow on it. - How to Lead a Life of Crime
3. Find an author’s name with the letter “S” in it - Victoria Schwab
4. Find a book with a female protagonist - Fangirl
5. Find the longest book you own - Edgar Allan Poe: Complete Tales and Poems
6. Find a book with a map in it or on it - Heroes of the Valley
7. Find a book with a face on it (photograph or illustrated) - Every Breath
Bonus: Find something on your shelf that isn’t a book. - My glasses (Without even thinking I just put them on to take the picture, I swear they were on my shelf.)

I found every single item except for number one. I don't seem to have any authors with my actual initials (AR) on my shelf. Here is what I found!
Bookshelf Scavenger Hunt Challenge Results

New Year's Resolution Challenge
Hosted by The Book That...

The Challenge: Pick books with titles that relate to each of your resolutions. Do as many or as few as you would like. I just picked four.
1. Someday, Someday, Maybe by Lauren Graham represents me trying to actually write my reviews within a week after finishing a book. I always say I'm going to do this but never actually do. Who knows, maybe this year will be the year.
2. The Distance Between Us by Kasie West is how I feel about my goal to go to more author signings this year. The distance between me and meeting my favorite authors is always so vast. It's always seems so hard to find the time to visit author signings since none really occur in my actual town or when I'm not working.
3. Split Second by Kasie West represents the amount of time that I swear it will take for me to respond to comments on my blog, which would be a vast improvement than when it sometimes takes me two weeks.
4. Ten by Gretchen McNeil is a horror story that perfectly represents the ten stubborn pounds I would like to lose this year.

My Final Thoughts

I had a lot of fun with Bout of Books this time around just like I always do, but I also didn't quite read as much as I wanted. I had a weird couple of days when I didn't even read 100 pages. I enjoyed the challenges a great deal, but I am a little sad I didn't spend a lot of time finding new blogs. I will have to work on that for next time.

Bout of Books Challenge: Book Staging

Bout of Books
Book Staging
Hosted by: Midnight Book Girl

The Challenge: You know how real estate agents will stage an apartment to attract potential buyers?  Well, that’s what you’re going to do to a book!

The Rules: Take a picture of a book you’re reading today, or any book you have lying around.  In the picture you should have the book in a setting, or surrounded by items, that represent the book.  It can mimic the cover, or represent characters/events/etc from the story.  Basically, make us want to read the book based on picture alone. This must be a picture YOU take and upload.  Simply stage the book, and upload a picture to your blog, Twitter or Goodreads account. If you don’t have any of these, than you can post your picture on my blog’s Facebook page.

I have never participated in a challenge like this before, but it was a blast. Enjoy the photo. I apologize for my poorly worded description.

I staged Gretchen McNeil's Ten. I added the movies Clue and I Know What You Did Last Summer to the photo because Ten reminded me of those movies a little bit when I read it. I also added a knife with "blood" (aka ketchup) on it because it is a gory novel, and I thought it would catch someone's attention. I also played with the color a little and tried to make the photo give off a creepy/dark feeling to help emphasize that Ten is a horror novel.

Bout of Books Challenge: Book Buying Spree

Bout of Books

Book Buying Spree
Hosted by: Bookish Comforts

The Challenge: Imagine if you will: you’ve just received some FANTASTIC news! You have won a $100 book buying spree! Now comes the hard part though: what books will you buy?! For this challenge, you’ll be creating your book buying spree wishlist.

Of course I was going to participate in this challenge, and I'm glad I did because it was a ton of fun! I focused on getting as many books as I could into my cart, keeping in mind that the books have to equal a total of $100 at most. I ended up getting 10 books that I wish I owned to fit into my cart at the total cost of $97.02 I loved pretending to shop for books, my husband said since I do this all the time (the pretending I was rich and bought all the books) I would ace this challenge, and he was right.
