Length: 393 pages
Genre: Young Adult Historical Fiction
Publisher: Philomel Books
Source: I met the author and received a free copy last year at BEA.
My Rating:
Goodreads Summary: Winter, 1945. Four teenagers. Four secrets. Each one born of a different homeland; each one hunted, and haunted, by tragedy, lies…and war. As thousands of desperate refugees flock to the coast in the midst of a Soviet advance, four paths converge, vying for passage aboard the Wilhelm Gustloff, a ship that promises safety and freedom. Yet not all promises can be kept. Inspired by the single greatest tragedy in maritime history, bestselling and award-winning author Ruta Sepetys (Between Shades of Gray) lifts the veil on a shockingly little-known casualty of World War II. An illuminating and life-affirming tale of heart and hope.
My Review
Salt to the Sea in Three Words: Heartbreaking. Memorable. Brave.Salt to the Sea is a novel I won't soon forget. Compassion, survival, the horrors of war, and memorable characters, makes for one captivating read.
I read Salt to the Sea in one day. It has short chapters making it a page turner. This book is based off a devastating true story in history that many may not know.
The Verdict: This book is sure to stand the test of time, and would be a great read for teens and adults alike looking for their next historical fiction.
I agree with all of this! I read it earlier this year for book club and am so glad to have read it. I have Between Shades of Gray on my shelf -- I have heard all good things about that one as well.
