Book Review: These Girls by: Sarah Pekkanen

These Girls by: Sarah Pekkanen (2012)
Publisher: Washington Square Press
317 pages
Genre: Fiction

Summary: Three girls, three different personal issues, three different lives intersect in New York and a friendship is born. Cate just got a promotion and is trying to figure out the ropes. Renee, Cate’s roommate, is hoping for a promotion to beauty editor, but the pressure builds and she begins taking diet pills. Then Abby enters into their lives, she is running away from some of her own personal demons. In the process of trying to figure out their lives they form a strong friendship and confront their demons together.

My Review

This is a wonderfully written story of friendship and family. This book did an amazing job at approaching subjects that many don’t like to talk about in public because it makes them uncomfortable.

The setting was enjoyable and new to me. Renee and Cate work at a woman’s magazine called Gloss. I really enjoyed seeing some behind the scene happenings at a magazine. Many times I felt like I was there in New York with these three girls, and I always enjoy a novel where I get sucked into its pages.

Simply put, this is a complex novel. Although there are many hard subject matters that are brought to light all are done well and not pushy. Some of the subjects that are artfully approached in this novel include beauty standards, gender in the workplace, the complexities of families, secrets, friendship, romantic relationships and more that I don’t want to say because it will give away some of the plot.

Each character was well crafted and full of secrets. I could relate in some degree to each character even though I don’t have personal experience with some of the subject matter. I could feel what these characters were feeling. When I first started reading the book I thought that maybe Pekkanen was revealing the character’s inner secrets too quickly, which would have been a big turn off for me, but I turned out to be wrong. There were still plenty of surprises as the novel progressed.

Lately I have been doing a lot of funny light reading. This was a big difference and I was slightly worried how I would respond to this huge jump in genre. Usually I have to be in a certain mood to read a heavy book like this, but I ended up really enjoying it. Plus, even though it hits on touchy subjects, there are still quite a few laughs from the main characters.

If the mood strikes you, or even if it doesn’t, you should read this one. It does a really good job at approaching tough subjects, and even though some of the characters make frustrating choices, I still really liked them.

Top Ten Tuesday #4: Top Ten Most Frustrating Characters Ever

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly event hosted over at The Broke and the Bookish.
This topic rocks! I read so much and I am sure I am missing some characters, but here it goes in no particular order of some characters that I wish never existed (harsh I know, but I do want to point out that I love some of these characters even if they are frustrating)...

  1. Zoey - The House of Night Series: She can be too drama filled and whiny for my taste. She needs to grow up. Also, the crazy love triangles are too much.
  2. Dolores Umbridge - Harry Potter Series - I'm not sure I need to go into detail here. She makes me so mad and gives me the creeps. I hate her.
  3. Peeta - The Hunger Games - I'm just not a fan of Petta, especially in book one. He is annoying... and not Gale.
  4. Luce - The Fallen Series - Her not knowing her true identity, her automatic love for Daniel, and these books taking forever to explain Luce and Daniel's relationship makes her one of my least favorite characters. Also, did she really not know who Bill was? Come on!
  5. Jacob - Twilight Saga - This childish character drives me insane.
  6. Scarlett 'O' Hara - Gone With the Wind - I couldn't leave her off this list.
  7. Mr. Dimmesdale - The Scarlet Letter - No thanks! He is sad.
  8. Anastasia - 50 Shades of Grey - It was hard for me to chose between her and Grey, both are painfully frustrating.
  9. The Greek Gods - Percy Jackson Series - They just don't listen to their demigod children! On the other hand, they are pretty cool.
  10. People that don't believe Mara Dyer - It really is frustrating when she keeps getting punished for things that she shouldn't be punished for. (I don't count her older brother in this list because he rocks.)
What characters frustrate you?

Review: Size 12 and Ready to Rock by: Meg Cabot

Size 12 and Ready to Rock by: Meg Cabot (A Heather Wells Mystery #4) (2012)
Publisher: William Morrow
361 pages
Genre: Mystery/Romance/Comedy

Summary: Heather Wells, an assistant residence hall director for New York College, is once again knee deep in a mysterious death. Her ex-boyfriend, Jordan, and his wife, the popular singer Tania Trace, are in town. Tania announces that she is holding a Rock Camp where Heather works. After finding out this shocking and dreadful news, things get even crazier for Heather when the producer of the Rock Camp ends up dead at the residence hall where she works. Now, not only does Heather have to deal with the snotty teenagers who are attending the camp, but she is up against a killer.

Review: Meg Cabot finally brought this series back to life…the wait was totally worth it.

Heads up, this can be a standalone novel! So don’t let the fact that this is book number four in the series keep you from checking this out.

Simply put, I love Heather. She is human (aka believable, down to earth, and connectable), funny, charming, an oddball, and quirky. What more could you want out of the main character/heroine in a novel? I would have to say not much. Also, her love interest, Cooper, is just as awesome. I promise.

I don’t really have anything negative to say about this book, which is kind of a nice thing since lately I feel like I haven’t been reading the best books. The plot is nicely paced, the characters were interesting and there were many laughs to be had. I also enjoyed the mysteriousness of the novel, it wasn’t always easy to guess what was coming next, and usually with these lighter comedies it is pretty easy for me to figure everything out. I guess the only reason I’m giving this book a 4.5 instead of a 5 is because when I was reading it I just didn’t get that 5/5 feeling. You know what I’m talking about? The one where you want to scream at the top of your lungs “read this book!” at the next person that you see.

Seriously, this book is great for a fun light hearted read. So if you are feeling down, it’s raining out, or you just read a book that made you think a lot, then pick this one up and start reading. If you are already a Meg Cabot fan, I don’t think you will be disappointed. I also think fans of Janet Evanovich would enjoy this series as well.

Click. Click. Click. - "Add to goodreads" Button Addiction

I LOVE this button...maybe just a little bit too much.

I am a New goodreads Addict
I have only recently really gotten into my goodreads account. I started one years ago, but I never used it much except to get book recommendations. Since I started blogging I have started using the account more, daily actually. I am keeping track of how many books I am reading this year (so far 7/100, 1 book ahead of schedule!), I post my reviews on the site, and I now enter giveaways (I've only won one book so far, but I'm determined to win a few more). I also never really did a lot with my to-be-read shelf... until I discovered THE + Add to goodreads BUTTON. I'm calling it a button. I don't know if that is the correct term.

Why I Love The Button
I love reading reviews, I find so many new books that I want to check out, and some of course that I care to forget. One day, while browsing through my list of book blogs that I love, I noticed a few that had the "Add To goodreads" button. When I realized that this button will automatically take me to goodreads so I can add a book to my to-read shelf I got really really excited. I can't tell you how many times I've read a review and thought to myself...hmmm I need to write this down or remember to add it to my TBR list later, and then promptly forgot.

This button opened up a whole new world of awesomness to me. Who knew that one button could change my life? Okay, I may be over exaggerating  but I really don't care. This has made my life so much easier, except for one small thing...my TBR pile is growing at an alarming rate. I can only read so fast and this is a problem. But for right now I have decided that I'm just going to enjoy my use of this button. (At least I only add books that I would really like to read, I haven't gone all clicking happy yet.)

I Will Now be Using The Button
By the way, all my reviews will now have this button on it. I'm just trying to help you other goodreads "to-read" shelf addicts out there. It took me a while to figure out how to do it, but I think I got it all worked out. It's really a picture with a link. (Who knew it would be so hard to add one button on your blog, maybe because it is the best button ever!)

Your Opinion on The Button
What do you guys think of this button? Do you use it a lot? Have you even really paid attention to it? I want to know your thoughts. I really hope I'm not the only one addicited to The Button, or goodreads in general.

I'm done rambling about The Button now. I promise.

Review: A Kiss in Time by: Alex Flinn

A Kiss in Time by: Alex Flinn (2010)
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers
383 pages
Genre: YA/Fantasy/Fairy Tale

Summary: This is a modern retelling of Sleeping Beauty. Talia fell under a spell after touching a spindle. Jack was on a tour group and came across the hidden castle with Talia and everyone there fast asleep. With one kiss Talia awakes, and chaos ensues, including an evil witch, Talia discovering the 21st century after being asleep for years, parental problems, and some romance thrown in.

Review: I love a good fairy tale retelling and I enjoyed Beastly by Alex Flinn, but this one wasn’t a hit out of the park, it was more like a double. I don’t know what it was about this book, but it just wasn’t as captivating as I had hoped it would be.

This was still a cute read, and it had me laughing during a lot of it. After Talia was asleep for so long, it was rather humorous to see her reaction to new technologies, such as a cell phone. I also enjoyed how Flinn spun the story of Sleeping Beauty, it was a fun take.

What bothered me so much about this book wasn't that I didn't like the plot, although at times it was kind of boring, my problem was with the two main characters. There was too much emphasis on looks, seriously, we get that Talia is beautiful, thanks. I know that she is a princess, but it is kind of sad that we, as the readers, are reminded over and over again of her beauty, there was more to her than that. Okay, maybe not a whole lot more, which was part of the problem. She was good at listening and giving advice, but other than that she seemed a little bit too spoiled and too much of a brat. I know there is reasoning behind why she acts that way, but it was just too frustrating for me. I was hoping for a stronger female lead. Not to mention Jack, he is naive and superficial at times, actually most of the time. I know they are teenagers, but still. I guess I just couldn’t really enjoy this book because I didn’t have any attachment to either of the main characters. I hate when that happens.

Overall, this book was just an okay book, but there are many out there that have enjoyed it more than me. It just didn’t do it for me personally.

Sadly, I could have been sleeping beauty through a good portion of this book.

Library Loot #6

Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Claire from The Captive Reader and Marg from The Adventures of an Intrepid Reader that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you’d like to participate, just write up your post-feel free to steal the button-and link it using the Mr. Linky any time during the week. And of course check out what other participants are getting from their libraries.

MY LIBRARY LOOT
I'm really hoping to read all of these. I still have one left over that I still need to read from the last time I went to the library.

This was a random book that I found on the shelf. I read the synopsis and thought it would be worth a try.

Hacking your way into college? Sounds like an interesting read to me.

I finally snagged this one at the library. With all the hype out there about this book... I can't wait to see what I think of it.

According to many, John Green is a must read author. I have yet to read anything by him, until now!

I was so excited when I found out that Meg Cabot had a new Heather Wells mystery novel out that I had to get it. So far I am enjoying it.

My Teasers
I know I did one from a quirky romantic mystery comedy novel last week, but I just so happen to be reading another one like that this week! Enjoy!

"Ankle holsters make you chafe. You can carry a Glock on your belt, but then everybody's gonna see it, unless you wear a jacket or keep your shirt untucked. You ladies have it easy, with your purses. You can hide anything in there." (pg. 149)

"Racing up the stairs to the second floor, my heart pounding - I'm a walker, not a runner. I try not to race anywhere unless it's an emergency, and according to the call I received, that's what this is - I find the corridor dark and deserted."  (pg. 1)

I am enjoying this funny Heather Wells Mystery. I haven't read one of these books in forever.

Review: Checkmate (Neighbor #3) by: R.L. Mathewson

Checkmate by: R.L. Mathewson (Neighbor #3) (2012)
Publisher: Self Published
350 pages
Genre: Steamy Romance/Comedy

Goodreads Summary: “There’s nothing worse than living next door to your childhood nemesis, except maybe being forced to share your dream project with him, being blackmailed into going along with something that was just wrong on so many levels, and having your hot cocoa stolen by the person that drove you to drink it in the first place.

As long as she has plenty of hot cocoa, a pair of pliers on hand and is able to resist Connor O’Neil’s bad boy charm then Rory James should be able to make it through this project with her sanity intact. If not…..

She’d probably face a few more nights in jail, have a few more restraining orders slapped against her and lose her heart to the man that ruined her life.”

Review: This series is full of laughs, love, and cuteness. I just discovered Mathewson last year, and I’m glad I did.

This is a steamy romance novel that will have you laughing until your eyes water. At times the comedy can be totally unbelievable, (I’m warning you now) but it doesn’t change the fact that this book is a perfect light read. It will put a smile on your face no matter how bad your day may be going.

Rory is a cute and strong goal driven woman. She is a pretty loveable character. I enjoy her need of hot chocolate, especially when she is stressed. The pranks she plays against Connor are sometimes so good, that I kind of wanted to do them myself, but I won’t of course. Connor on the other hand, can be a jerk, and I know he has the bad boy thing going for him, but seriously? Sometimes his thinking is sexist; it can be and was very frustrating. He did however grow on me, and he does change. So I do award him some points, plus it doesn't hurt that he is a hunk.

The Bradford guys from the previous Neighbor novels make an appearance, and I’m glad they do. I just love those always hungry can never be given enough food crazy men.

I enjoyed this book, but I still think the previous two books were better. Either way, you should check out this series, or at least this author. She has some other good books too. Although some have a few errors in them, they are self-published, there aren't enough to really take away from the novel as a whole.

Looking for a light read with a little bit of steaminess and a lot of laughs? This is your book.

Book Recommendation Friday #1: If you liked The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer...

My favorite part of my blog is my "If you liked... then read..." page. Therefore, I have decided to put a post up every other Friday with some new book recommendations instead of just posting them directly on that page of my blog, that way everyone can see them!

I will try to come up with different and unique reading suggestions for each post. I only recommend books that I have already read, so please post below if you have any other reading suggestions.

The books I suggest aren't always necessarily the same genre/plot so much as they have the same feel... and are great reads of course.

Here is my first post. Click on the book title to find out more about each one. Enjoy!

If you liked The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by: Michelle Hodkin...then you should read...
  1. The Body Finder by: Kimberly Detring
  2. Before I Fall by: Lauren Oliver
  3. Immortal Beloved by: Cate Tiernan
  4. When Lightning Strikes by: Meg Cabot
  5. The Book of Blood and Shadow by: Robin Wasserman

What other reading recommendations would you like to hear for future posts?

Review: Notorious Nineteen by: Janet Evanovich

Notorious Nineteen by: Janet Evanovich (2012)
Publisher: Bantam Books
302 pages
Genre: Fiction/Mystery/Romance/Comedy

Summary: Stephanie Plum,  who works as a bounty hunter for her creepy relative, is back once again trying to find a skip. This time she is on the search for Geoffrey Cubbin, the man who stole millions from an assisted living facility. In her plan to try and uncover where Cubbin is hiding, Stephanie takes on another job as Ranger’s date. Someone is after Ranger and now Stephanie is in the crossfire.

Review: Every time I read a Stephanie Plum novel I laugh out loud, and this one wasn't any different.

This quote really made me laugh, and this is only one of many. I even shared it with my husband since he is a Game of Thrones fan...

“I want to be there when you get Cubbin. And I don’t want to be left out of the television show either. Little people are sexy now. Have you seen Game of Thrones? We’re hot."

Full of explosions, lots of eating, food poisoning, a horrible bridesmaid dress, two hot guys, and a Tiki, this one, even though not my favorite, was still hilarious and entertaining. Even though I love me some Evanovich I need to be truthful, so here is the sad part about this book...

Although I enjoyed Stephanie’s crazy antics and the goofball comedy in Notorious Nineteen, I hate to admit it, but I am starting to think this series is becoming slightly repetitive. There are some plot points that I expect in every book, and if I didn't get them I would be disappointed (if you read the series you know exactly what I'm talking about, car explosions anyone?), but sometimes I get too much deja vu when reading. Also, I think it is time that Stephanie finally chooses between Ranger and Morelli. I'm starting to not even care who she chooses, (Who am I kidding? I am still going to root for Ranger.) as long as she chooses. I don't want this series to end, but I'm starting to think that it might be time.  She did just finish book 19, plus there are several novellas that go along with this series.

If you are looking for a light read that will make you smile, then I suggest you check out this series. They may be getting a little repetitive, but if I'm being honest, I’m still going to read every one.

This series can be read out of order, Evanovich gives a little background information in each book. As a loyal reader this can be somewhat frustrating, but not bad since I usually need a refresher anyway. I’m not sure I would recommend reading it out of order though, because it is better when you read all of them from start to finish, and it's easier to follow. But, it is always good to have that option since 19 books is kind of daunting.

FYI: There was a movie that came out a while ago based on the first book in this series called One for the Money. I am telling you right now, the movie didn't do this series justice. Plus, the first book isn't the best anyway. So don’t let the movie keep you from reading.

Waiting on Wednesday #1: The Storyteller by: Jodi Picoult

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Release Date: February 26
Goodreads Summary: Sage Singer befriends an old man who's particularly beloved in her community. Josef Weber is everyone's favorite retired teacher and Little League coach and they strike up a friendship at the bakery where Sage works. One day he asks Sage for a favor: to kill him. Shocked, Sage refuses…and then he confesses his darkest secret - he deserves to die, because he was a Nazi SS guard. Complicating the matter? Sage's grandmother is a Holocaust survivor.

What do you do when evil lives next door? Can someone who's committed a truly heinous act ever atone for it with subsequent good behavior? Should you offer forgiveness to someone if you aren't the party who was wronged? And most of all - if Sage even considers his request - is it murder, or justice?

I'm not an avid Jodi Picoult reader, but I have enjoyed several of her books. This one just sounds too good to pass up.

What books are you waiting for?

So far this Stephanie Plum novel is hilarious as always. I wouldn't call it my favorite, but it is still pretty good.

Review: Every Day by: David Levithan

Every Day by: David Levithan (2012)
Publisher: Alfred A. Knopf
322 pages
Genre: Young Adult

Summary: A is a teenager who wakes up every day in a different body. He does his best not to interfere in other people’s lives. Then one day he meets Rhiannon, and everything changes.

Review: Have you read this book yet? If not, go read it. I’m serious. I finally did and I shouldn't have waited so long. I don’t think it is a five star book, I’m giving it four, but it is a notable and can be life altering novel. I know it made me stop and think about my life.

This is a young adult book that every, and I mean every, teenager should read. This book is and has everything. Thought provoking, check. Full of life lessons, check. Interesting, check. Romance, check. Adventure, check. I could go on and on.

So you may be wondering why I am only giving this book four starts instead of five after my last few sentences of nothing but praise. Here is my reasoning. I felt like I would have gotten even more emotionally involved in this book if the relationship between A and Rhiannon didn't grow into love so quickly. I felt like it came a little bit out of left field. Also, I think it could have been a little bit longer, giving us more information on who A is. I’m not saying Levithan didn't give us any answers, he gave us enough, but I would have liked just a few more. In general I wanted a little more depth. Therefore I am only giving it a 4/5, but I still technically think it is a must read.

Now, I have two amazingly awesome things I want to share about this novel. One, the blurring of genders lines in this novel is fabulous. It really makes you pause and think about what really does matter in a person and what makes them who they are. Second, I loved seeing how A reacted when he woke up in different people’s bodies and how he had to adapt. I won’t go into more detail because I don’t want to ruin any of the surprises, but it is very interesting.

This book will make you stop and think about your life, about love, and how you spend every day. I give a round of applause to Levithan and his amazingly unique well written novel. This one will stay with me for a long time.
