The Bookish Report

Here are all of the top bookish stories, blog posts, pictures, and videos I found this past week. I put this post up every Sunday so come back again next week for more bookish awesomeness.

News

This article about research done on library use is quite lengthy, but if you just focus on page two you can discover all kinds of interesting things about people who don't and do use the library. Are you a library lover, information omnivore, young and restless, or a different kind of user all together? I'm a library lover.

Have you heard about Amtrak Residency yet? Read the article. I actually am very much intrigued.

R.L. Stine didn't only just receive a lifetime achievement award by the Horror Writers Association, but he announced he will be writing more Fear Street novels, and a Goosebumps project for the big screen starring Jack Black is in the works. I used to read a lot of R.L. Stine books when I was younger.

J.K. Rowling added some new information on Pottermore regarding the Quidditch World Cup.

I don't, I won't, read like this just to read faster. No thank you. How could you really enjoy a book? I guess maybe if it was reading a textbook for school this would be an okay idea, but even then what about graphs, and other photos that are in textbooks to help people learn?

See which is the most downloadable book in your state! Mine is American Gods by Neil Gaiman. I think this is yet another sign that I really do need to start reading his books.

Blog Posts

She Has Left The Room looks at race and civil rights in young adult books that are't historical, actually they aren't even really of this world.

Are you a movie and a book fan? I am! Foil The Plot has an amazing new great feature "Page & Screen Pairings" that recommends books based on movies you love and vice versa for your reading/viewing pleasure.

If you have yet to read any Stephen King because you are not a fan of the horror genre then you should take a minute to look over My Novel Opinion's post that features King's books that won't scare the crap out of you.

How do you choose your next read? I'm a mix of both a free spirit and a planner.

I can enjoy books that don't have romance in them, but I have noticed lately that I really almost prefer for a book to have a little bit of romance in it (I'm talking about books that aren't in the romance genre), IF it isn't the main focus and is done nicely. If this topic interests you I suggest you read Writer of Wrongs's post Ship Shape: All I Need is Love.

  1. I used to read a ton of RL Stine books too! He was my favorite in middle school/high school along with Christopher Pike.

    1. I read those two authors a lot! Another one I couldn't get enough of was Caroline B. Cooney.

  2. That comic makes me sad :(

And I'm definitely a library lover too :)

As for choosing my next book? I think I'm a mix too. I'd like to be more of a free spirit, but have become more of a planner because of review books. I'm thinking about cooling it on the review books in the future pretty much because I miss being more free-spirited with what I choose to read :)

    1. The comic is really depressing.
Yay for all library lovers!!! :D
I think I should do the same thing, I have had a good amount of review books this month and that just isn't as fun as being a free-spirited book chooser.

  3. I AM A LIBRARY LOVER.

Now that that is out of the way... I am probably 90% reader, 10% free spirit. I generally follow a schedule, but I am not afraid to throw that schedule out the window when I feel like it.

"In this romance novel, playboy Prince Alexei meets Pamela at a party. When Pamela leaves, she thanks the stars she will never see him again. To her surprise, Prince Alexei has occupied her house, and they must deal with each other much more than she could have ever wanted."

Kill me. Is this really New Jersey's most downloaded book? I'm moving.

    R. L. Stine's books scare the crap out of me. So do Stephen Kings. In fact I am just a big baby.

    1. YES TO THE LIBRARY LOVERS OUT THERE!!!!

hahahaha *Still laughing about your state's most downloaded book.

Some of the goosebumps books when I was younger gave me nightmares, and sadly, they still creep me out today.

  4. I saw the post on speed reading strategies, and I just had to tell you something! I don't use them because I don't actually take in the information if it's a school book and I try to use any strategy (the people who give you testing prep teach "chunking"). This other solution recently appeared though especially useful for reading online articles! If you have a windows 8.1 Pro or Windows 8.1 RT running device, you can use this trick. The windows 8.1 version of IE 11 actually has an icon on the lower left of the screen (next to the address bar) that looks like a book. If you click on this icon it lays out the page in a sepia toned way optimized for reading. It also removes all the adds to make it easier to read without the annoying distractions! It's like my new favorite thing and actually convinced me to switch from Chrome to IE for my main internet browser :D here is a link about it in case all I did was confuse you: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ie/archive/2014/03/04/introducing-reading-view-in-ie-11.aspx and apparently it also will work with the "Reading List" app on Windows 8.1 and you can save articles to read at a later time in this layout? I haven't tried that part yet... :D
