FOX didn't pick up the Delirium pilot. Very sad news. I'm a little surprised because it already has a pretty big following, but this is FOX we are talking about. I feel like they are always canceling shows and there isn't a whole lot I watch on their channel. Either way, we still love you Lauren Oliver! Check out her very nice post about the hard topic.

There was a lot of discussion yesterday on Twitter about newish FTC guidelines that pertain to us bloggers. After some digging I found a helpful post on the subject. Although some of the items seem a little crazy most seem like they will be easy to adhere to.

Have you ever stopped to think about gendered book covers? Author Maureen Johnson has and made a bold statement about it this week. Check out some fan cover art where they switched genders of various book covers. They came up with some interesting stuff that really made me stop and think and laugh.

I just turned 25 last month, I feel very old and may have had a slight quarter life crisis. I found this post with a list of 30 books that women my age should read. I have read some of them, but not all. I'm thinking this may be a new challenge I give myself.

BLOG POST

I just found this wonderful blog this week and love her Coffee Shop Talk post. This week she discussed books that she didn't like but everyone else did. I'm sure we have felt this way before.

BOOK REVIEW

Nicole over at The Quiet Concert wrote a great 5 star review of Pivot Point by: Kasie West this week. She got me super pumped up for this one. I can't wait to read it! On the top of my TBR pile it went.

ALLEGIANT COVER REVEAL

So what does everyone think? I like it a lot, but for some reason I'm not a huge fan of the colors.

To all the moms out there:

  1. Alli!!! so, first of all, is there a specific way you want us to tell you if there are any books we would like you to read? I can't seem to find a dedicated spot...

    Here goes:
Ellen Hopkins, "Triangles", "Tilt", and "Collateral" :) I've been wanting to buy them for some time but I don't really have money. I'm dying to know if her foray into adult novels was good or not because she is so good at young adult. Also I want to know if her crossing between adult and young adult with "Triangles" and "Tilt" how the characters cross over. I know she has done it with two of her other books (which blew my mind with perfect and impulse b/c I didn't see it coming) but I wanted to know if it still worked when she went between adult and young adult because I feel like the entire tone could be different.

    THANKS!!! :)

    1. You can always email me reading suggestions at itisabooklife@gmail.com!

I haven't read those ones by Ellen Hopkins but I really enjoyed Crank and Perfect. I will look into them and see how she does writing adult novels so I can give you some feedback. Thanks for the suggestions! :)

  2. I love these posts of yours! I don't always catch up on bookish news, so I think it's very nice that you collect some of it. Just thought I'd say that :)
I saw Maureen Johnson's article about gendered book covers and I was kind of surprised - I'd never really noticed that. And then I got a bit upset that female writers get so cheesy covers. What is with that?!
I really like the cover for Allegiant, the colors and the water symbol, and then it actually matches the previous books! Unfortunately, I won't be getting this, because I have the rest in UK editions - so I'm looking forward to seeing their cover.

    1. I have so much fun writing this post. I'm really glad you enjoy it.

I never took the time to think about the gendered book covers either until I saw that post. But I agree with you that it is crazy... I see a lot of cheesy covers by female authors but not really by male authors.

I love that she kept the Allegiant cover in align with the others. I will have to look up the UK edition of Divergent. I'm intrigued.

  3. I'm so sad to hear about the Delirium TV show. Stupid FOX ="(

  4. Being featured in these posts makes me feel so warm and fuzzy inside. It's so cool being able to recommend a good book to someone, now I just hope you like it too :D.

I am a little nervous about the new FTC guidelines (more so bc I don't want to mess up!) but I don't think I have to worry yet (seeing as I don't really get ARCs). I will see how other book bloggers handle this and take note.

I hadn't heard about the Delirium show being canceled but I have to admit I am not all that bummed. The second two books disappointed me a little, I'd hate to see the book ruined on TV (a real possibility), and I have too many shows already! :D

I never thought about gendered book covers but it is an interesting topic. Almost all YA book covers are geared toward women I think (for similar reasons I would imagine female leads are most common)

And to conclude this insanely long comment - the Allegiant cover is my least favorite of the three but pretty consistent with the other three so I shouldn't be surprised by it's lack of a big reveal

And I lied - this is my last comment - Happy Belated Birthday :D

    1. Well you always write such great reviews! I love recommending books too, it is the best feeling ever. I'm sure I will enjoy it! Don't fret.

I was a little nervous about the FTC guidelines at first but I don't think it will be too bad. I will go over those more carefully though later to make sure I'm doing everything right.

Yea, Delirium was the best book in the series.

Yea I wasn't a huge fan of this cover, I was hoping for something amazing.

Thanks! - Plus, I love your comments so I don't mind that it is long.

  5. I am kind of bummed about Delirium -- I almost never like the adaptation better, but I do think a lot of books would do better as TV shows than movies. It just seems there would be more time to tell the story and do a good job with it, so I'm sad that I won't get to test that theory with this one.

And girl, 25 isn't old! There are some good books on that list though, so I suppose you don't need a full blown quarter life crisis to enjoy them!

And I had seen the gendered cover thing -- it is so true that *most* women will read anything, but *most* men won't read anything they think is girly and I kind of hate that. Every book is not for every person, but I do think some women's books are unfairly perceived and sometimes marketed in such a way that reinforces people biases.

    1. I was really upset. I wanted to see what they would do with the books. I agree with you that I feel like they have more options when doing a book to tv show adaption instead of a movie adaption. Oh well, I watch True Blood based off the Sookie Books and they are completely different. I still watch the show but I now longer really think of them as based off the books. This way at least Delirium won't get messed up and upset me. :)

Awww, thanks. I guess you are right, I'm not too old. ;)

I never really stopped to think about covers and gender until reading that article. I can see what they mean though. I agree with you on that matter.
