TTT #41: Top Ten Books I've Read So Far In 2015

I am a huge fan of shoving my favorite books at people and this week's awesome topic lets me do just that!  I did end up only doing 10 books even though my heart called for 15. I was trying not to cheat this time around. Without further ado, in no particular order, here are my favorite reads of the year so far!

1. Mosquitoland by David Arnold - Unique and wonderful. A must read for everyone old and young.
2. Things We Know by Heart by Jessi Kirby - Yes.
3. Torn Away by Jennifer Brown - Talk about tragedy, hope, and what it really means to loose everything.
4. The Burning Sky by Sherry Thomas - I was worried this sequel wouldn't be as good as the first book. I was worried for no reason.
5. Salt and Stone by Victoria Scott - Why yes, I do love it when people compete in a competition and have to fight to survive, especially if there are adorable animals involved (obviously I don't like the animals getting hurt part, but their adorableness).

6. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas - Sarah J. Maas can do no wrong in my eyes.
7. The Heart of Betrayal by Mary E. Pearson - Give me more!
8. Royal Wedding by Meg Cabot- I missed Mia and the Princess Diaries gang like crazy. It was worth the wait.
9. The Wrath & The Dawn by Renee Ahdieh - Hands down this is one of the best re-tellings I have ever encountered. Talk about a swoon worthy forbidden romance.
10. El Deafo by CeCe Bell - This may be a graphic novel but that shouldn't keep you away from giving it a try. It was humorous, heartbreaking, and perfect.

My Review

I have previously read two books by this author and liked them a great deal. I can honestly say that The Lives Between Us is another beautiful and heartfelt story by this author that I thoroughly enjoyed. Theresea Rizzo really knows how to write a complex and moving family drama.

The Lives Between Us captured me from the first page, and I wasn't freed from its grasp until the very end. I don't read a lot of books about politics or super controversial subjects, but I am glad I read this one. Its fast pace and interesting subject matter makes for a quick and interesting read.

The best part of this novel has to be the strong characters whose presences can be felt through the page. The MC, Skye, is probably my least favorite due to her sometimes very immature attitude, but she did grow as a character and watching her struggle between her career as a reporter and keeping that separate from her personal life was compelling. I appreciated every single character and what they brought to this story about family, love, and living life to its fullest. They were complex and unique in their own way. Mark is especially sweet and genuine and a character I really liked, even if he wasn't a bad boy, he was a good fit for Skye. 

The Lives Between Us is a pretty well written thought provoking piece on stem cell research and how far a person would go to save their loved one. I know that I would go to the ends of the earth if someone I loved was in danger of dying. Although I wasn't too shocked by any of the secret reveals in this one, I still appreciated the overall plot and the different family and relationship dramas.

If you like a good story that focuses on politics, family, a little romance, and what the struggle is like when dealt with having to make the right ethical choice for you, then you will enjoy The Lives Between Us. 

How Far Would You Go For Your Favorite Books?

1. I would give up the internet for a month for a signed first edition of this book:

The Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder made me love reading when I was a child and I could re-read them a million times more. I would be more than happy to give up the internet for a month for a signed first edition of any of the books in this beloved series.

2. I would give up pizza for a year if it meant I could sit next to this author on a long plane ride:

Sarah J. Maas (Throne of Glass) - I know I could think of at least a million and one things I would love to talk about with Sarah if I had the chance. I would do it even if it meant giving up pizza, and I love pizza.

3. I would sit through a thousand hours of commercials if it would ensure that Hollywood made this book into a (really good) movie:

Cress by Marissa Meyer - I would love to see Cress and Thorne on the big screen, if done perfectly of course. (Obviously having the whole series on the big screen (or tv) would be even better, but I didn't know if that was cheating for this question.

4. I would never read a new book again if it meant I could live inside this book: 

Harry Potter - This is a given.

5. I would let my Google search history be made public if it meant I could be best friends with this author:

My history isn't really bad at all, but I would share it with you all if it meant I could be best friends with Rainbow Rowell.

6. I would donate everything I own to Goodwill if it meant I could date this book character in real life:

This was the hardest question of all, not because I care about giving away all my possessions, but because I couldn't pick which book character I wanted to be my real life book boyfriend. Drum roll please... Chaol Westfall from Throne of Glass is the winner! This man.... Sigh. He will be mine one day.

My Review

The sequel to The Kiss of Deception was a huge and wonderful success!

Here is why I loved it so...

The Heart of Betrayal had more secrets, power plays, and lies than I could ever have hoped to imagine to have in one novel. I loved watching all the characters participate in the crafting of this beautiful web of lies, deceit, and strategic moves, some to survive, and some just for power.

Rafe and Lia are one of my favorite fictional couples. Not only that, but they are both wonderfully genius in their own ways. I loved getting to learn more about them and all of the other characters in this stunning sequel.

This book kept me up late at night. My mantra: Must... Keep... Reading...

I was never bored and I was always on high alert.

I had so many emotions and feels while reading this one, enough to fill the Grand Canyon.

My only small tiny complaint, the reason I only gave this book 4.5 stars instead of 5, the idea of Lia having the gift wasn't as fully explored as I would have liked it to be.

My Review

Reading Half Wild turned out to be a bumpy ride. Did I like it? Yes. Did I really love it? Not quite.

When I began reading Half Wild the format and the writing of the book was a little hard to grasp.  It didn't flow very well at first and seemed choppy to me. I really struggled getting used to it. It wasn't that it was bad, just different. It did grow on me and I came to appreciate how the unique formatting and writing style added to the story.

I enjoyed the first book in this trilogy a great deal and although the second installment was good, it wasn't as good. I was more than excited to get back to Nathan and Gabriel, and thankfully these two characters didn't disappoint. They were just how I remembered them. I'm glad I got to spend more time with them. Nathan deals with the aftermath of receiving his powerful gift while Gabriel stands ever as his best friend. I do wish Gabriel could break free from Nathan, but love is a powerful thing. I also enjoyed meeting new magical characters. Joining Nathan and the group on their journey to save one girl and start a rebellion against those that are supposed to be the good witches made for an interesting read.

Half Wild was intense and had some very graphic moments. It was a unique read and one that I am finding hard to categorize. I am not sure who exactly I would recommend it to. Someone who is open to trying new things I suppose. Even though the first part of the book dragged a little for me (plot wise and because I was getting used to the writing style) the last half of the book really picked up. I loved all the action. It was complex and had a great ending. I really look forward to reading the next book. In all honesty, the last part of this book is what jumped my rating from 3.5 to 4 stars.

My Review

The Cover: I know it isn't great, but this is one of those times when you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. Look past it.

The Setting: I love a book that takes place on a college campus. Plus, it is a fun and interesting setting that just works for this story. 

The Characters: What a unique and fun bunch of people! I like the witchy MC, Emma, a lot. She really starts to come into her own by the end of the novel. All the dead guys that come back that Emma helps out are pretty awesome as well. I like how each of them is different. I enjoyed watching Emma try to give them some peace with their deaths. It was also kind of funny watching her try to handle all of the unique personalities each ghost had. These guys could be a handful!

The Plot: Although the overall plot was perfectly fine, I had one major issue with this book. It tries to be a romance, a mystery/thriller, and a paranormal book. I think because of this high reaching goal it falls slightly flat on all three categories. Although all three elements are present in the story, none of them are really fleshed out as well as I had hoped. I never felt the quick romance, I couldn't get into the murder mystery thing that popped up at the end, and the magic was only here and there without any good explanations about it. I may have liked all these elements of the story, but they were lacking a good deal of any kind of depth. I wanted more. 

Do I recommend this book? Sure. It was a fun and entertaining read. Sometimes that is just what you need.

My Final Thoughts: Even with its flaws, I did really enjoy reading How to Date Dead Guys with all of its amusing characters. I will probably read the next book.

My Review

What did I think of Emmy & Oliver? I thought it was brilliant. I read this book in 24 hours. I stayed up so late reading this book that I was beyond tired the next day at work. I don't regret my choices. Emmy & Oliver is written with heart and precision.

When you read this book you will fall right into Emmy and Oliver's story. The characters in Emmy & Oliver are brought to life in a beautiful way. Their story is full of hope, heartbreak, memories, and futures. I loved these two characters. They are my new favorite couple with their complex special relationship. They just seem to get each other and make each other better. I am very fond of them. I also happen to like all the other characters in this book as well. Emmy's friends are wonderful. I also appreciated that even though their families aren't perfect, far from it, they are a part of the story. I feel like young adult novels are getting better at making sure they mention family members, because they do play a big part of your teen years in some way. Friendships and families matter.

Emmy & Oliver is officially a new favorite of mine this year. I could spend forever with Emmy and Oliver. This one is going to be a re-read for sure. I don't read a lot of YA contemporary, but lately the few books I have read have blown me away. My favorite thing about this book besides its wonderful characters is its uniqueness. I have never read a book quite like this before. Not to mention the simple and perfect cover. I adore it so much. I love the color and the font and everything. Basically I love everything about this book. Grab a copy of Emmy & Oliver as soon as you can. You won't regret it.

My Review

I liked the first book, The Bone Season, but I didn't love it. I felt like it got more hype than it deserved, but I just felt like I HAD to give the second book a shot. I'm glad I did. I ended up enjoying The Mime Order more than The Bone Season. (Sorry this review is kind of all over the place. Just go with it.)

The Mime Order begins right where the first book left off. Thanks to the Recaptains website and their review of the first book I wasn't lost when I started reading. I also liked how I was thrown into action right off the bat. I love me some action. 

One of the things I didn't like about the first book was how hard it was for me to follow the complex world full of so many different clairvoyant people, not to mention all the weird made up words. Luckily, it was easier to follow all of that in the second book since I had time to become familiar with it in the first one thus making this read a much more enjoyable one.

The second main thing I struggled with in the first book was how Paige seemed kind of dumb to me. I was having problems connecting with her for whatever reason. However, in The Mime Order I loved her. She was a stronger and harder woman. It didn't really surprise me too much that she is a stronger person after what she went through in the last book. My favorite thing about her... not only does she change, but she wants others to change as well and is willing to fight for it, even if it seems impossible. I also love Warden... it's too bad he isn't in the book as much as I would like. I won't even begin to talk about these two together. I'm sure you can guess that I am a fan. Forbidden love is my favorite.

The Mime Order focuses on the politics of the mime lordes and the underworld. It's the main focus of the book and although very interesting and important at times it did make me lose attention a little bit. I did like the book more and more with each passing page. The author does a wonderful job at building me up for the big to do at the end of the novel. It had a great ending.

The Mime Order is a dark and sometimes very gloomy novel. It's full of strong, weak, evil, and kind characters. The Final Verdict: I will continue reading this series.

My Review

Why isn't everybody reading this?! Why?! This book is perfect for those of you that like The Amazing Race and the National Treasure movies. Even if you don't like those things you really should read this book! It is fantastic. Here is why...

Reasons Why You Should Read Inherit Midnight

• There is an abundance of family secrets and drama. Don't you just love secrets? I do.
• It is full of action from beginning to end.
• It's fast paced, and sometimes you just need a quick read.
• There is too much fun in this book and it's exciting!
• This is a book you will want to read in one sitting.
• It is unique, cute, and always interesting.
• It has a wealth of interesting characters.
• Avery and Riley make a great team!
• Who wouldn't want to read a book about a crazy competition between family members to see who inherits the family wealth?
• Basically it's a really really good book.

I don't think you need anymore reasons as to why you should read Inherit Midnight. I'm sure I have convinced you by now. Go read Inherit Midnight. Give it a whirl!

Wow... My Blog Turns 3 Today! It's Giveaway Time!

I can't believe it has been three years since I started this blog. Three years to the day! I can't believe I stuck with it for so long! I feel proud, excited, and all around good. 

Blogging for me isn't just a hobby, or a chore, it is my passion. When I'm not reading, I'm blogging. If I am not doing either it is because I am spending time with my husband, usually watching movies (or I am at work). I blog because I love sharing my love of books with the world. I love fangriling. I love gabbing. I love writing and reading reviews. I love it all. Does it occasionally get a little stressful? Sure, but then I take a few days off and I am ready to go again. I love it. (I don't think I have used the word love enough in this post yet, good thing there are many more to come.)

Do you know what else I love?! You guys! I am so thankful to each and every one of my followers, my blogger friends (you awesome people know who you are), and the random book lovers that visit and comment. You are all awesome. I love talking to you all about how much I love the bad boys, hate the evil villains, cheer for the MC, etc.  I think you all deserve some virtual hugs!
